How online lessons work
Online lessons are real lessons. You and your teacher meet on a video call and spend the time talking, listening and working through the things you came to focus on. The teaching is the same as our face-to-face teaching. Only the room is different.
The platform
Zoom, Microsoft Teams or Google Meet, whichever you already use at work or feel most comfortable with. There is nothing to install if you would rather not; lessons run in the browser. If video calls are already part of your week, the technical side will be familiar.
The lesson
One-to-one with the same teacher each time, or two teachers if you would like a mix of teaching styles. Lessons start at 30 minutes, though most students prefer a 60-minute session. Your teacher plans around what you need and brings the materials. Conversational, structured, tailored to you. No fixed course, no pre-recorded modules.
Materials and homework
Reading, writing tasks, slides and notes are shared on screen during the lesson and sent on afterwards. If you are working on something specific, an email to send, a presentation to give, a CV to refine, share the real document and you work on it together in real time.
Recordings and follow-up
Lessons can be recorded if reviewing them helps, with your agreement. Your teacher sends a short summary after each lesson with the language points covered and any homework agreed. You can pause and resume blocks around holidays, busy weeks and travel.
What you need
Very little. If you have used a video call before, for work or for family, you are ready.
- A laptop, tablet or desktop with a working camera and microphone. A phone works as an emergency backup, but a bigger screen makes shared documents far easier to read.
- A reasonably reliable internet connection. If it drops, we simply pick up where we left off and you are not charged for the time.
- A quiet space where you can speak out loud without being interrupted. This matters more than the equipment.
- Headphones with a microphone if you have them, for clearer sound. Built-in laptop microphones are fine if you do not.

Meet your teacher online
Your first lesson is a getting-to-know-you lesson. You discuss your goals in more detail, try the teaching style, work through a few suggested activities and agree what to focus on. If the technical side is new to you, we walk you through it. No commitment, no pressure.
Start your lessons
When you are ready, book a block. Lessons fit around your schedule, your teacher tailors each one to you, and you can pause or move sessions when life needs you to.
I tried a marketplace for six months and had a different teacher every time. It was useful, but I never felt I was making real progress. Switching to PS English meant the same teacher every week, lessons built around my actual job, and someone who remembered what we had worked on last time. Within three months I felt the difference. How much does an online English tutor cost?
Online English tutors range from around £15 an hour at the budget end of marketplaces to over £100 an hour for executive coaching with established schools. PS English sits in the middle of that range, with discounts for longer lessons and larger prepaid packages. Are online English tutors worth it?
For most adult learners, yes. The teaching is the same as face-to-face teaching; only the room changes. The honest answer is that the tutor matters more than the medium. A good teacher you see online once a week is far more useful than a mediocre teacher you see in person, and a marketplace teacher you change every session is far less useful than one experienced teacher who knows you. The students who report the best results are the ones who keep the same teacher week after week.
Is one hour of tutoring a week enough?
One hour a week is enough for steady, sustainable progress, and it is the most common pattern among our students. The ones who do best with an hour a week are those who use the language in between, at work, at university or socially. Two or three lessons a week speeds things up noticeably if you have a specific event coming up. Beyond three, the limit becomes how much you can practise between lessons rather than the lessons themselves.
What is the best online English tutor site?
It depends what you are trying to do. Marketplaces are useful if you want low-cost, low-commitment conversation practice with a rotating set of teachers. They are less useful if you are working towards something specific, a job, a course, an exam, a move to the UK, and want consistent progress with one teacher who knows your situation. A school is the better fit when continuity, experience and accountability matter. The best online tutor is the one who fits the work you are actually trying to do.
What is the ideal age for online tutoring?
Our online lessons are for adult learners from late teens upwards, with no upper age limit. Most of our online students are working professionals in their late twenties to fifties, university students, or older adults returning to study or work. Online lessons suit adults particularly well: you are usually self-motivated, you manage your own time, and you can join from wherever you are. We do not teach children or under-sixteens.
Can I take online lessons from outside the UK?
Yes. Our online lessons are available anywhere in the world. We teach students across the UK, students who travel constantly for work, students preparing to move to the UK, and students who have never set foot in it, including the Japanese students who have been with us for years. Time zones are the only real constraint, and lesson times are agreed to suit both you and your teacher.
Prefer to meet in person?
If you are in London and would rather meet face-to-face, our teachers travel to you, at your office, your home or a quiet space nearby. You can take lessons in person, or mix in-person and online as your week allows. The teaching is the same, the teacher is the same, and the booking process is the same.
