Teaching one-to-one since 2001 has given us hundreds of student stories. The ones below are the kind of thing we hear most often: a real situation at work, at university, or in everyday life, and the change that came from working with the same teacher week after week.

I had been working in English in London for nearly fifteen years before I came to PS English. My English was good enough to keep my job and good enough to be polite at dinner, but in meetings I was guessing. I would prepare what I wanted to say in advance, miss the moment, and then sit silent for the rest of the hour.
My teacher at PS English did not start with grammar. We started with a real meeting I had coming up that week. We mapped out the structure, worked through the language I would need, and rehearsed the difficult moments until they stopped being difficult. We did the same the following week, and the week after that, and at some point I noticed I was no longer preparing in the same way. I was simply talking.
Three months in, my manager told me I had become the person she relied on to chair the difficult meetings. That had never happened in fifteen years. I am still with PS English now, two years later. The lessons are honest, useful and exactly what I needed.

Business and Professional English

I was preparing for a job interview for a systems designer position, and I wanted to improve how I talked about my skills and experience in English. The lessons were useful not only for the language itself, but also for understanding some of the cultural differences in interviews. I came to realise that it is not enough just to explain what I have done in the past. I also need to find a way to present my experience in terms of what the company is looking for and how I could contribute to the role. I also learned a lot of useful expressions that helped me organise my answers more naturally, such as “I’ve come to realise how important…”, “One of my strengths is…”, and “From my experience…”. The lessons helped me feel better prepared and more confident about explaining my background in a clear and relevant way.

English for University
Students preparing for, or already on, a degree at a UK university. Tutorials, seminars, lectures, essays, vivas.
I had several presentations to give at university, and I wanted some help preparing for them in English. My tutor helped me with pronunciation and choosing appropriate expressions for the presentations, which was very useful. I was also quite pleased that the lessons went beyond just English coaching. We looked at things like timing, voice projection and how much information to put on each slide. One thing I found particularly helpful was the advice not to make the slides too “heavy” with text. I learned that, in presentations, less is often more. The lessons helped me feel better prepared and more comfortable when giving my university presentations.

Online English Coaching
Students learning entirely online, from across the UK and occasionally further afield.
Before starting online lessons at PS English, I found it difficult to understand everyday English conversation, and I was often worried about whether what I was saying was being accurately conveyed. I also wanted to develop more captivating expressions that could evoke emotion, particularly when giving guidance. Through the one-to-one online lessons, I was able to learn how to express myself well and appropriately for my script. I could also focus on the parts of my pronunciation that were unclear or didn’t get through properly, and train those areas specifically. In addition to the online lessons themselves, I was provided with materials for self-study. By listening again to parts that I had found unclear and then working on them during the lessons, I was able to deepen my understanding even further.
Before starting online lessons at PS English, I struggled with my pronunciation, and what I said often didn’t get across clearly. In particular, I found it very challenging to communicate with non-native English speakers. What I have found most helpful about the one-to-one online lessons is receiving accurate advice tailored to my individual needs. In particular, role-playing workplace conversations has been very useful. I used to be afraid of speaking English and would often get by with just saying “Thank you” or “Sorry” wherever I went. Recently, though, I’ve become more confident and have learned how to respond properly when people ask me questions.
Face-to-Face Lessons in London

I liked the flexibility of the face-to-face lessons. Sometimes my tutor came to my office, and at other times we met in a café, depending on what was most convenient. When we met in a café, my teacher was always careful to choose somewhere as quiet as possible, which was helpful, especially in central London. It made it much easier to concentrate and have a proper conversation. I also found the lesson notes very useful. At the end of each lesson, my teacher would give me notes on the language we had covered, including useful expressions, corrections and points to work on. I could then look through them again afterwards, which made it easier to review the lesson and remember what I had learned. Overall, I appreciated having lessons that were flexible and practical, while still being well organised.
