Free English level test
Check your English level
This is a listening test, not a grammar quiz. You will hear twenty-one short lines of real spoken British English, the way people actually say them, and choose every reply that would sound natural. Nobody is testing whether you know the textbook answer. We are testing whether you would follow the conversation.
It is built for people who already use English day to day and want an honest picture of where they stand, whether that is for work, for study, or for living in the UK.
You will need sound. Headphones are best, but any speaker will do as long as you are somewhere reasonably quiet.
Carry on where you left off?
You started this test already. Your answers are still here.
First, a quick sound check
Every question is spoken, so let us make sure you can hear before you start. Headphones are ideal, and somewhere quiet helps more than you would think.
Nothing at all?
- Check your phone is not on silent. On an iPhone the switch is on the left hand edge.
- Turn the volume up, then press play again.
- If you are using headphones, check they are properly connected.
- Try a different browser if you can.
Listen, then choose every reply that sounds natural. More than one may be right.
An accessibility option. Using it means your result reflects reading rather than listening.
Guessing will not help you. Wrong answers cancel out right ones, so only choose the replies you would actually say.

Sorry, something went wrong
We could not send your details this time. Your result above is unaffected. Please try again, or email us at ask@psenglish.co.uk.
This is a rough guide, not a diagnosis
Twenty-one questions can place you on a scale. They cannot hear you speak, notice the habit that is holding you back, or work out what to do about it. That is what the free consultation is for: a real teacher, listening to you properly, telling you what would actually help. It is free, there is no commitment, and it is a much better use of half an hour than any test.
Common questions
How long does the test take?
About ten minutes. There are twenty-one questions, each built around a short clip of one to three seconds, and you can replay any clip as many times as you like.
Do I need to give my email address?
No. Your result appears on screen the moment you finish, and we never hold it back behind a form. If you would like us to follow up, or would like a copy by email, there is an optional form beside your result. Nothing is sent unless you fill it in.
Is this an official English qualification?
No, and it is not meant to be. It gives you a quick, honest indication of your level using the CEFR scale, from A1 to C1. An official qualification means a formal exam such as IELTS, Cambridge or TOEFL, which we also prepare people for.
Why can I not see the question written down?
Because reading a sentence and understanding it spoken are two very different skills, and it is the second one that decides whether a real conversation goes well. If you need the text for accessibility reasons, there is a toggle to show it, and your result will note that you used it.
Can more than one answer be right?
Yes, and often more than one is. Select every reply you would genuinely say. Guessing will lower your score rather than raise it, so it pays to be honest with yourself.
What happens after I get my result?
You will see your level, what it means in practice, and the pages most worth reading next. If you would like a proper answer rather than a rough one, book a free consultation and a teacher will listen to you speak and tell you what would actually help.
