Who Speak English Naturally lessons are for

Speak English Naturally at PS English is for people who already have a good level of English, but don't always feel as comfortable speaking as they do reading or writing.

Most of our students are upper-intermediate or above. They know the grammar. They have a good vocabulary. They can read articles reasonably well.

But speaking is different. They may still hesitate, overthink what they want to say, or feel that their English sounds less natural than they want it to.

That's what we primarily work on, unless you tell us otherwise.

If you can read this page comfortably, you're probably at the right level for us.

If you can read this page comfortably, you are very likely the right level for us.

Speak English Naturally lessons work especially well for:

Professionals whose English at work is accurate but stiff, and who want their spoken English to match the quality of the rest of their work

Long-term UK residents who have been speaking English every day for years but still feel one step removed from natural conversation

Intermediate learners who may have had a long break from formal English study and want to pick up where they once left off, transforming negative memories of English at school into positive memories of real functional English learning

University students who follow lectures and tutorials well but freeze in informal conversation with classmates

Returning learners who studied English at school, lost it for a decade, and want to bring it back into shape for a new chapter in the UK

Anyone with a real plateau where the textbook learning has finished but the natural English has not arrived

Inside the lessons

What you work on in Speak English Naturally lessons

Every Speak English Naturally lesson at PS English is built around real spoken English. There is no textbook in the room. In your first lesson, your teacher works out where your spoken English is stiff, slow or formal in ways it does not need to be, and plans the lessons that follow around the parts of natural speech that will move you forward fastest. Most students focus on some combination of the areas below, in whatever proportion suits the way they actually use English.

Natural rhythm and pace

The flow of British spoken English, including which words to stress, where to pause, and how to keep a conversation moving without rushing or trailing off.

Everyday phrases and chunks

The small, ready-made phrases that native speakers reach for without thinking. "Sort of", "to be fair", "I was going to say", "the thing is". The pieces of language that make speech feel easy rather than assembled.

Filler words and thinking time

How to use natural fillers, hesitation markers and connecting phrases without sounding lost, and how to buy thinking time the way a confident speaker does.

Informal and conversational register

When to relax your English, when to soften a request, when to use a contraction, and how to move between formal and informal speech in the same conversation.

Listening for the real thing

Following native British English at full speed, including reductions, linking sounds, and the way real speech compresses in ways that textbooks rarely show.

Small talk and everyday conversation

Weather, weekends, queues, trains, coffee, the news. The conversational glue of British life, taught as language rather than as cultural trivia.

Storytelling and personal anecdote

Telling a short story in English. This is something many students struggle with, even when their English is already quite good. They can speak English, but when they want to tell a story or explain something properly, it does not always come out the way they want.

If your spoken English needs polish specifically on the sounds and the accent, that is the focus of our British English Pronunciation page. The two work well together, and many students do both.

Why PS English

How our Speak English Naturally lessons are different

1

Real conversations, not scripted practice

Every lesson is a real conversation between two adults, shaped by your teacher around what you actually need to work on. We do not use role-play for the sake of it. But if practising a real situation you are likely to face outside the classroom would genuinely help, such as a meeting, an interview or a difficult conversation, we can role-play it with you.

The conversation is still the bulk of the lesson, and your teacher highlights useful language out of it as you go.

2

Experienced British teachers

Our teachers are native British English speakers with years of experience teaching adult learners. The natural English you learn from us is genuinely British and genuinely natural. You are not being matched with the next available person on a global roster, and you are not learning from a non-native speaker who has studied the language well.

3

Honest, specific feedback

The single thing that breaks most plateau learners free is honest, specific feedback from someone who can hear what they cannot hear in themselves. Our teachers will tell you when a phrase sounds stilted, when a word is right but wrong for the moment, and when a tiny adjustment will lift a whole sentence. Said kindly, said clearly, said early enough in the lesson to use it before the lesson ends.

4

Flexible, online or in person

Lessons fit around your life, not the other way around. Take them online from anywhere in the UK, in person in central London, or mix the two as it suits you. Online lessons work especially well for conversation practice because the platform and the camera disappear after the first few minutes.

What our Speak English Naturally students say

Living outside the UK, I always felt like my English was stuck. I really struggled with fluency and keeping up with natural, fast-paced conversations when I went overseas travelling. That’s why I started lessons with PS English, and it has made a difference.

Instead of overwhelming me with overly specific vocab that I would never actually use, my tutor focused on what really matters. They gave me useful, everyday expressions that I can use in many different situations when I am travelling abroad.

What I appreciated most was the structure of the lessons. My tutor didn’t just teach me a phrase and move on; they made sure to come back and review everything from time to time. That repetition was exactly what I needed to actually remember the phrases and start using them naturally.

Am I a perfectly fluent speaker now? Probably not! But I feel so much more confident. The regular, structured conversation practice I get every week is impossible for me without these dedicated 1-to-1 lessons.

Getting started

How it works

1

Book a 20-minute consultation to match you with a teacher

We usually hold this over Zoom with our Principal. In this conversation, we confirm your goals, any preferences for lesson content that you have, and a time for lessons that works for you.

2

Your 60-minute online trial lesson for £20

You meet the teacher we have matched for you and who is available to teach you beyond the first lesson. In the introductory first lesson, the teacher will ask some more follow-up questions, assess your spoken English further, offer you a flavour of the teaching style and content they think will be beneficial for you, and together you agree what comes next. The aim will be for you to go on to future lessons practising conversations in contexts that matter to you. You are also welcome to skip the trial lesson offer and select a block of lessons and get going straightaway.

3

You decide

No pressure either way. Most students book a block of lessons after the trial lesson, but plenty take a few days to think it over, and a few decide PS English is not the right fit or they request another lesson with a different teacher. All of those are fine.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

How can I speak English more naturally?

Speaking English more naturally usually comes down to a few things working together: rhythm, useful phrases, and being able to use the English you already know without having to stop and think about every word. Rhythm is the stress and flow of spoken English. It often gets less attention in traditional language learning and textbooks, but it makes a big difference to how natural and easy your speech sounds. Useful phrases are the groups of words that fluent speakers tend to use together. Learning these as whole phrases, rather than building every sentence word by word, can make speaking much easier. The third part is being able to access your English in the moment. You may know exactly how to say something when you have time to think, but find it much harder in a fast-moving conversation. In our Speak English Naturally lessons, we work on all three, focusing more on whichever areas are holding you back.

What are the 7 rules for excellent English speaking?

There is no single agreed list of "7 rules", but the principles that most experienced English teachers agree on are these. Speak in chunks rather than single words. Listen to native speakers more than you speak. Imitate the rhythm, not just the words. Build a small library of natural phrases and reuse them. Slow down when you need to think, rather than rushing to fill silence. Be willing to be wrong in front of someone who can help you fix it. And practise the same situations until they feel automatic. None of these are tricks. They are habits, and the fastest way to build them is one-to-one conversation with a teacher who can hear what you cannot hear yourself.

What is A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2 in English?

These are the six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), the most widely used international scale for measuring language ability. A1 and A2 are beginner levels. B1 is intermediate and B2 is upper-intermediate, the point at which most learners can hold a real conversation. C1 is advanced and C2 is proficient, close to a well-educated native speaker. Speak English Naturally lessons at PS English are most effective for students from B2 upwards. If you can read this page comfortably, you are very likely the right level.

What is the fastest way to improve my English?

The fastest honest answer is consistent one-to-one practice with a good teacher, combined with regular contact with real English between lessons. The "consistent" part matters more than the "intensive" part. One well-prepared lesson a week, with proper listening, reading or conversation practice in the days between, will take most students further than a short burst of daily lessons followed by a long quiet stretch. There are no shortcuts that work; there are habits that compound. Our lessons are designed to make those habits feel manageable rather than punishing.

What level do I need to be for Speak English Naturally lessons?

We work with students from upper-intermediate (CEFR B2) upwards on this page. If you can hold a real conversation in English but still feel like your spoken English is a step behind your written English, or behind the level of the rest of your work, you are exactly the right level for us. If you are below intermediate, general English lessons will move you forward faster than a conversation-focused page like this one, and we will say so honestly at the assessment lesson.

Is this the same as accent training?

No, and the distinction matters. Accent training, which we cover on our British English Pronunciation page, focuses on the sounds, the intonation and the rhythm of British English. Speak English Naturally focuses on the phrases, the conversational habits and the everyday flow of British English. Many students do both, and a few of our students focus on one and not the other. Your teacher will help you choose at the assessment lesson.

Are lessons online or face-to-face?

Both are available. Most students choose online, which suits conversation practice particularly well: the camera and the platform fade into the background after a few minutes, and lessons fit around the rest of life. Face-to-face lessons are available in London for students who prefer them, and some students mix the two. Online lessons use Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams. You can read more on our Online English Coach and Face-to-Face Lessons in London pages.
